Paradis, Anne-Laure Sacriste, tapestry installation, copper, and enamelled ceramic, Grand Prix 2019.
For the 2019 edition of the Cité internationale de la tapisserie’s call for creations, themed "The Open Work: Tapestry in Extension," which aims to reward works that integrate tapestry into decorative ensembles, Anne-Laure Sacriste was awarded the Grand Prix for Paradis. The project, about 2 meters high, combines tapestry, copper panels, copper checkerboards, and enamelled ceramic objects.
Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, the École Duperré, and the Parson School of Design in New York, Anne-Laure Sacriste's practice reflects this dual training, where painting, engraving, and drawing are incorporated into complex installations. She is represented by the Vera Munro gallery in Hamburg.
Drawing a motif, between verdure and millefleurs, from the monk Fra Angelico in The Annunciation painted in the San Marco convent in Florence, Anne-Laure Sacriste offers a contemplative space that can be moved and installed according to the location. The installation consists of two tapestry panels stretched on frames, Verdure à la colonne and Verdure All-over.
Two copper plates, at the height of the tapestries, play with their reflections, shifting the image and questioning the viewer's perception. A checkerboard on the floor, made of seven copper plates (resonating with the gardens designed by Mirei Shigemori in Japan), extends the tapestry's image and juxtaposes perspectives. Three enamelled ceramic turtles complete the arrangement. In this ambiguous, shifting space, the image endlessly disappears, reappears, and multiplies.
