Our collections in practice

The Cité internationale de la tapisserie houses nearly 25,000 objects in its collections, which trace the history of Aubusson tapestry from its origins to the contemporary period, as well as all the stages of tapestry production.

In a few figures

The Cité not only preserves tapestries; only 6,200 objects in its collections are textiles (wall tapestries, upholstery tapestries, carpets, weaving samples, and embroideries). The majority of the collections consist of maquettes (about 5,800) and cartoons (about 13,000) used in the preparation of tapestries. The Cité also preserves several looms and tools used in the making of a tapestry.

Conservation of collections

The Cité preserves collections from several companies related to the history of tapestry, as well as collections from the studios of artists who created designs for tapestries.
