Restauration

Tapestry is a medium designed to last over time. However, it sometimes happens that the condition of the works requires the intervention of restoration or conservation experts. Today, in Aubusson, specialised workshops provide expertise in textile treatment and conservation.

Presentation

True laboratories in their own right, restoration workshops operate thanks to the expertise of experienced staff. Textile deterioration can be caused by various factors: fluctuations in humidity and temperature, exposure to ultraviolet light and improper lighting, the presence of insects, poor hanging or inadequate storage of the work, among others.

Complete restoration or conservation

Depending on the condition of the work, the wishes of the owner, and the recommendations of the restorer, the choice will be made between a full restoration—where the damaged part is rewoven with a focus on aesthetic appearance—or conservation, which involves treatments aimed solely at halting deterioration, prioritizing the authenticity and historical character of the piece.

The restoration workshop

The Cité internationale de la tapisserie in Aubusson welcomes one of the two restoration workshops of the Mobilier National. The lissiers restorers in this public workshop primarily work on pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. Specialized in retraiture, they restore public works for various locations.
