George: Tribute to George Sand – A Monumental Tapestry by Françoise Pétrovitch

A Monumental Tapestry Celebrating George Sand
On 8 June 2026, as part of the national commemorations marking the 150th anniversary of the death of George Sand, the Cité internationale de la tapisserie unveiled George, a monumental 23-metre-long tapestry installation commissioned by the French State as part of its Public Art Commission programme.
Initiated and led by the Cité internationale de la tapisserie, this exceptional work, created by artist Françoise Pétrovitch, pays tribute to George Sand through a contemporary work that brings together art, literature and the exceptional craftsmanship of Aubusson tapestry. More than a portrait of the celebrated novelist, George offers a poetic interpretation of her legacy, her freedom, her social commitment and her profound connection to the landscapes that inspired her writing.
The result of more than 8,000 hours of weaving, George is the culmination of a remarkable collaborative undertaking involving artist Françoise Pétrovitch, cartoon designer Delphine Mangeret, dyer Nadia Petkovic of Teinture Aubusson Lab, and master weavers Sarah Chassain, Agathe Juillet, Clémence Tonnoir and Frédérique Battu of Manufacture Robert Four. Together, they brought this extraordinary creation to life, showcasing the exceptional excellence of Aubusson tapestry craftsmanship.
Presented on a specially designed freestanding structure that releases the tapestry from the wall, George offers a new way of experiencing tapestry. Visitors are invited to walk around the work, discovering both its front and selected areas of its reverse, revealing the weaving process and the craftsmanship of the master weavers. The tapestry thus becomes a true installation, creating a unique and immersive visitor experience.
The unveiling of this major work was one of the highlights of the 2026 National Commemorations dedicated to George Sand. It reflects the Cité internationale de la tapisserie's commitment to contemporary creation, the transmission of exceptional craftsmanship and artistic innovation, while demonstrating Aubusson tapestry's enduring capacity to reinvent itself without ever losing sight of its heritage.
