"George" by Françoise Pétrovitch — Exhibition at the Bertrand Museum in Châteauroux

Starting 26 September 2026, the Bertrand Museum in Châteauroux will host George, an exceptional large-scale tapestry installation measuring 23 × 2.15 metres, currently being woven in Aubusson. This original creation pays tribute to George Sand, marking the 150th anniversary of her death in 2026.
This tapestry-installation reinterprets the tradition of commemorative tapestries through the vision of a contemporary artist, offering a fresh perspective on the life and work of George Sand, a major figure in French literature.
Initiated by the Cité internationale de la tapisserie and entrusted to French artist Françoise Pétrovitch, this public art commission is supported by the French Ministry of Culture, the Indre Departmental Council and the Centre-Val de Loire Regional Council.
Weaving began in spring 2024 and was entrusted to La Manufacture Robert Four in Aubusson. The manufactory offers guided visits, providing an opportunity to discover this exceptional creation, which represents more than 8,000 hours of work.
