A nearly twelve-year adventure unfolded in Aubusson with the creation of the tapestry Aubusson Weaves Tolkien. Since the first exchanges with the rights holders of the famous author of The Lord of the Rings in 2012, approximately 160m² of weaving have come to life through fourteen tapestries and two rugs, interpreting J.R.R. Tolkien's original illustrations in textile.
For the first time, these sixteen works are presented side by side, accompanied by many previously unseen elements related to their preparation. All the know-how of Aubusson is represented within this large tapestry: spinning, dyeing, cartoons, smooth-warp tapestry, flat woven rugs, and knot-pile rugs. Around forty people and seven weaving workshops contributed to bringing J.R.R. Tolkien's illustrations to life in wool, making this tapestry an eminently collective adventure. This project is also the result of a close collaboration with the writer's family, particularly with his youngest son and literary executor, Christopher Tolkien, and his wife, Baillie Tolkien. As fine connoisseurs of J.R.R. Tolkien's work, their insight and advice guided the creation of the tapestry from start to finish.
